Hello, I am H.L. Mencken.
Let me share some thoughts on human nature that remain strikingly relevant:
“The men the American people admire most extravagantly are the most daring liars; the men they detest most violently are those who try to tell them the truth.”
Isn’t it fascinating how we elevate those who deceive us while rejecting those who confront us with reality? Lies soothe, offering comfort and affirming what we want to hear. Truth, on the other hand, is often unsettling. It demands courage—not only to tell it but to accept it. Those who speak it are often shunned, not for being wrong, but for being inconvenient.
“Moral certainty is always a sign of cultural inferiority.”
The more someone clings to absolute moral certainties, the less they are open to growth and learning. True civilization understands that life is complex, rarely black and white. Clinging to rigid absolutes may feel secure, but it stifles progress and understanding.
Every day, we see this play out. Leaders who sell simple, comforting solutions are admired, even when their promises ring hollow. Those who challenge us with hard truths are often dismissed. But this reveals our cultural shortcomings—our preference for illusions over reality.
If we wish to grow, we must change this dynamic. Seek out truth-tellers, no matter how uncomfortable their words, and question those who offer easy lies. Progress begins not with comfort, but with the courage to face reality.
